Exercise is my passion! Physical Education was always one of my favorite subjects. Running, hiking, bicycling, swimming, and the outdoors were always a part of my life. My love for travel lead me to a degree in International Relations from UC Davis. After a career in sales, I returned to school for credentials in multiple subject teaching and Physical Education. I love learning new skills, collaborating, and leading an active lifestyle.

My husband and two children love to swim, run, bike, and be active too! 

My vision for ALL children is to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle by eating well and staying fit!

Parent P.E. Week Information

I look forward to meeting you! I’d love for you to experience our Physical Education classes with your child. We work on building positive mindsets, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and learn foundational skills for a variety of sports. The goal is to instill the love for physical activity that will last a lifetime!

 

What to expect: Be ready to move – run, skip, gallop, jump, have fun, and LEARN while participating as a teammate in your child’s P.E. class. If participation isn’t possible, please come and observe!

 

When: Meet on the blacktop on the P.E. numbers at your child’s P.E. time (the schedule is below). SIGN IN AT THE OFFICE – WEAR A GUEST BADGE – AND BE SURE YOU’RE CLEARED AS A VOLUNTEER!

 

What if it rains? We’ll have to reschedule due to space restrictions.

 

Can younger siblings join or participate too? Sorry- not at this event.

Remember to prepare for P.E. days...

1. BRING A WATER BOTTLE -

 *Label it with their name and classroom; Marvin Mustang  Rm. 2 (students may rehydrate anytime).

2. WEAR PROPER EXERCISE ATTIRE- flexible, breathable, dress in layers (label jackets- first and last name). * dry fit, shorts, t-shirt, long sleeve if chilly, but wear a shirt underneath, NO sandals, and NO boots, please.

3. WEAR a hat, sunscreen, and sun glasses (optional) on P.E. days.

4. WEAR athletic shoes with laces or Velcro; they have great support and they won't fall off when running.

5. HAVE a POSITIVE ATTITUDE! 

6. BE SAFE, HAVE FUN, LISTEN AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!

2018-2019 August- September Activities and Skills

AUGUST - SEPTEMBER:

 

- Learning procedures, class expectations, practice new skills, and getting to know you, and more!

- Team building and cooperative activities on the field/ blacktop

 

UNDERHAND TOSS CUES:

- Stand facing your target

- bring your throwing arm back before you throw

- step with your opposite foot as you throw

- release the ball between your knee and waste level

- follow through to your target

 

Students practiced underhand throws with partners using bean bags, had targets like hula hoops and buckets, classes have learned how to bowl and basic scoring, students are learning international games like bocce ball, and we've played several games like get the gopher, an underhand rolling game with teams. Students have also learned line dances like the Continental Drift (Sid Shuffle, Cupid Shuffle, and the Macarena).

 

Students have learned playground games like hopscotch, tetherball, four square, spider/ switch, and wall ball.

 

OCTOBER- NOVEMBER- DECEMBER:

STUDENTS WILL LEARN  dribbling, kicking, passing, shooting skills and more in sports like soccer, hockey, basketball, as well as other fun team games.

 

PARENTS: You have an open invitation to join us in P.E.! Also, if you have experience coaching or teaching soccer, hockey, lacrosse, football, nutrition, fitness training, dance, etc. I'd love to collaborate with you!

Parents: Grab your running shoes and throw on your workout gear! Get ready to workout and experience a physical education class elementary style with your child/ children! Look on the class schedule above - your child's teacher and join in on that day/ time.

Activities that your child has experienced so far:

  • key elements of an overhand and underhand throw, kicking (soccer skills), dribbling a soccer ball, basketball skills, baseball/ softball skills- batting practice, pitching practice.
  • locomotor skills- jogging, leaping, hopping, skipping, sliding, side shuffle, skipping, galloping, running, sprinting, long distance running.
  • tennis- ball balancing, bounce ups/ downs, aiming the ball, racket angle, practicing returning the ball to a partner, serving,
  • playground games: kickball, tether ball, hopscotch, jump roping (tricks and skills), wall ball, four square, and more!
  • fitness stations: lifting weights (kettle bells), rope whips, balance beam/ balance pods, walking on stilts, pogo balls, pogo sticks, scootering, jumping jacks, planks, crazy 8s and more!
  • fifthgrade- Fitnessgram Testing (February- May)
  • other skills we've practiced in the past: Lacrosse- passing and catching, Bowling, dancing- rhythm and movement, cooperative skills- parachute, kindness tag, communication skills, lessons on optimism, being respectful, a good sport, and team player.
  • future games- Cricket, bocce ball, volley ball, team hand ball, hockey, and the First Tee Golf.

MINI TEAM HANDBALL, BASKETBALL, HOCKEY and Fitnessgram Testing

We just completed a three week unit on mini team handball. All grades had a different focus or strategy to work on. We covered the key elements of an overhand throw and dribbling. We practiced and improved on catching and passing. 

Students were able to learn one of the most popular games in the world and it's an olympic team sport! We had a great time rotating positions from goalie, referee, offense, and defensive positions so everyone had a fair amount of time. 

We learned the basic rules and modified them for elementary students:

Rule of Three's: 1. Pass to three separate players before shooting a goal

                            2. Hold the ball for no more than three seconds.

                            3. Dribble up to three times before passing.

This game is a combination of soccer, hockey, and basketball. It's a very fast paced game that is a total BLAST!

 

BASKETBALL: We moved onto basketball after this game. We're covering dribbling, the anatomy of a court- side lines, base lines, key, jump circle, centerline, foul line, passing- bounce pass, chest pass, overhead pass, shooting- BEEF- Bend knees, Elbow in, Extend, Follow through.

Students will learn the classic playground/ basketball games like HORSE, Around the World, Poison, and Knock out, as well as scrimmaging in the upper grades.

Practice shooting and dribbling everyday! You'll see a great difference!

Most of all HAVE FUN!!!

 

Hockey- We will start this after basketball.

 

 

How Much Activity Do Children Need?

How much physical activity do children need?

Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity each day.

This may sound like a lot, but don’t worry! You’ll soon  encourage your child to participate in activities that are age-appropriate, enjoyable and offer variety!

Just make sure your child or adolescent is doing three types of physical activity:

1. Aerobic Activity

Aerobic activity should make up most of your child’s 60 or more minutes of physical activity each day. This can include either moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, or vigorous-intensity activity, such as running. Be sure to include vigorous-intensity aerobic activity on at least 3 days per week.

2. Muscle Strengthening

Include muscle strengthening activities, such as gymnastics, sit ups or push-ups, at least 3 days per week as part of your child’s 60 or more minutes.

3. Bone Strengthening

Include bone strengthening activities, such as jumping rope or running, at least 3 days per week as part of your child’s 60 or more minutes.

FITNESS TESTING

Excellent work for all students in grades 1-5 who ran the half mile or the mile! Way to go!

Students have been working on their fitness cards, it's a way to track their hard work. Included on their cards are the Fitnessgram tests: sit and reach (hamstring flexibility test), curl ups, push ups, trunk lift, height, weight, and the 1/2 mile or 1 mile run. Other tests are hula hoop, jump rope, skip, and gallop. We'll be testing three times per year; November, February, and May.

Stay healthy by exercising daily and eating well. EAT THE RAINBOW- colorful fruits and vegetables.

SOCCER

Students have been practicing their fancy footwork in various drills, skills, and games that improve kicking, dribbling, passing, and trapping. The first and second grade students will continue to focus on improving their kicking, passing, and dribbling skills. The upper grade students will participate in scrimmages to work on their offense skills, defensive skills, and team work.

Students have been working on the four step bowling approach.  Push, step, swing, and roll!  Teamwork, hand eye coordination, cooperation, mathematics (scoring), and motor programming, has been our focus for the last three weeks. Students have demonstrated  great improvement in technique and aim..  Many spares and strikes have occurred.

Physical Education News

The first month of class is dedicated to learning rules, safety tips, exercise routines like warm ups, the run course, and relays. We establish a solid understanding of playground rules and games like tether ball, wall ball, four square, buns up, two touch, hopscotch, and other classic games. It's important for everyone to be on the same page and it prevents disagreements at recess. It is my goal to get everyone active and to truly enjoy physical education so that it becomes a lifetime habit. I believe it is very important to have a healthy mind, body, and soul. We learn that a positive attitude is just as important as teamwork, great sportsmanship, and giving it your best effort. I design my lessons based on CA state standards: Physical Education Model Content Standards for Public Schools and the Physical Education Framework. Education Code Section 51210

This code requires 200 minutes of physical education every 10 school days for students in grades one through six.

 

I encourage you to work with your child at home for fun on a variety of activities. For example: yoga, bicycle, run, swim, hike, throw and catch different objects- softball, frisbee, or football, work on kicking skills, play cricket, gymnastics, push ups, pull ups, and jump rope, etc. Thank you for supporting physical education!
