Principal's Message

Date:  8/19/20

My name is Kathleen Martins-- I am so excited to be joining the Montevideo Community this year as your new principal. I come to you most recently from Cal High as an assistant principal and am thrilled to return to elementary school where I began my teaching career 15 years ago. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of our students and our families as we embark on the 21/22 school year. It’s an exciting time as we welcome your students back to campus.

My number one priority as we return to campus this year is the well-being of our students. Our students’ social emotional health Is key to setting students up for academic success. Students need to feel  safe, supported and comfortable before they can learn.  Some of our students have never been on our campus, and for others, it has been a year and a half. Our teachers and staff know that this is our top priority--- making sure that students adjust and have the support they need as they transition back into the classroom.

I’m  realistic and know that there may be some tears and may be some stressors that trigger our students. We will do our very best to get the students the support they need and will work with you to figure out the best way to support your student.

Masks must be worn in all indoor locations and are optional outside. We will have three different lunch times. During those times, students will be split in half, with  half of the students on the blacktop and the other half  in the multipurpose room. Students will then switch locations. Please note that students always have the option of eating outside.

Montevideo Elementary is Committed to the Following Principles:

  • Every child deserves a free and top-quality education.

  • ALL students can learn when learning is relevant.

  • Curriculum and instruction should provide equity, opportunity, access to higher level thinking and a robust education for all.

  • Social-Emotional learning and well-being, character development and rigorous academics are equally important in preparing our students for secondary school, college and the workforce.

  • Students flourish when education includes art, music, science and social science.

  • Parent participation is key to student success.

  • Education leads to advancement and provides choices for all students.

When I am not with our amazing students, I enjoy all sports (watching and playing), being active, spending time with my adult daughters, traveling, and being with friends.

I look forward to collaborating with parents, staff, and community leaders to support our students in setting and reaching personal goals, forming meaningful friendships and relationships, and achieving academic excellence.  Here’s to a successful school year!  Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns or feedback.
